US Announces Extension to Canada and Mexico Travel Restrictions

Following the initial travel restrictions announced between the United States and Canadian and Mexican borders, the US officials have just announced that they will extend the restrictions by a further 30 days due to the Coronavirus pandemic that has been so devastating in the US.

The first US border travel restriction announcement came in March as the US first started taking land border restriction steps to try and prevent the spread of the disease. The restrictions stipulate that all non-essential travel over the US borders has been banned.

Canada and Mexico currently both have significantly lower numbers of Coronavirus cases and whilst the US has recorded more than 40,000 deaths so far, Canada has just over 1,600 total deaths to date and Mexico less than 1,000, as of April 21 stats shared by the Worldometers.info.

Coronavirus stats to date

When you look at the number of cases per 1M of the population, the US has 2,396, Canada has 976 and Mexico just 68. Whilst the landscape for the Coronavirus stats is changing all of the time, Canada and Mexico has at this current time been much less impacted by the disease. However, this does not mean that their rates have peaked at this stage but the US imposed travel restrictions may have significantly helped them to prevent the spread in their countries.

There has been a lot of controversy regarding the various bans that the administration has put in place and now people are questioning whether clear signs were missed and travel restrictions imposed too late. Trump claims that he slowed down the spread of Covid-19 by placing a travel ban from China, which he suggests he brought in on 31 January.

Trump also announces intent to suspend immigration

Trump has also just announced his plans to suspend immigration temporarily as a further tactic to attempt to prevent the spread of Covid-19. He used his Twitter account to make the announcement but no further details regarding which immigration programs his proposals involve.

What restrictions are usually in place for crossing the US borders?

As the US operates with a visa system, those crossing the US borders would be required to have the relevant documents. The North American Free Trade Agreement was put in place to support trade and the economy between the US, Canada and Mexico.

Citizens of Mexico and Canada are able to apply for a TN non-immigrant visa to enable them to work in the US, provided that they meet the criteria under the visa. The TN visa conditions are:

  • Must be a citizen of Mexico or Canada
  • The profession is on the NAFTA list
  • The position requires a NAFTA professional
  • Must be pre-arranged job with an employer (i.e. not self employed)
  • Must have the relevant qualifications and/or experience required

It looks like restrictions will be in place for some time, or at least until there is a significant improvement in the fight against the Coronavirus, evidenced by lower cases and death rates.
