Trump Announces Immigration Suspension

Donald Trump has just announced that he plans to suspend immigration to the US as part of the country’s approach to tackling the Covid-19 pandemic. As the death figures in the US topped 40,000 and not yet any convincing signs that the death rates are slowing down, Trump has now stated his intention to suspend immigration to the US.

Prior to the Covid-19 pandemic reaching the US, Trump had already made some very significant changes to immigration policies, through travel bans, increased visa fees and reduced visa allocation numbers.

Trump’s Twitter announcement

Trump used his Twitter account to make the announcement, with his tweet stating:

"In light of the attack from the Invisible Enemy, as well as the need to protect the jobs of our GREAT American Citizens, I will be signing an executive order to temporarily suspend immigration into the United States!

As of yet, there has been no additional information regarding his plan and it is very likely that it will face legal challenges, much like most of his previously proposed immigration changes. Whilst Trump is adamant that he is acting on behalf of the health and job opportunities for US citizens, many of his opponents will feel that this is a blatant way of pushing his anti-immigration agenda forward.

New York has been severely impacted by Coronavirus

Currently, around a third of the worldwide Covid-19 cases have been recorded in the US, reflecting the significant impact on the country, compared to others around the world. New York has been hit particularly hard, with over 18,000 Covid-19 related deaths reported in this state alone.

As well as opposition pointing towards Trump’s anti-immigration tactics, many are questioning whether this is his latest attempt to divert attention from his failure to prevent the disease from spreading.

Congressmen speak up in disapproval of Trump

This has been highlighted by Democratic Texas congressman Joaquin Castro:

"The action is not only an attempt to divert attention away from Trump’s failure to stop the spread of the coronavirus and save lives, but an authoritarian-like move to take advantage of a crisis and advance his anti-immigrant agenda. We must come together to reject his division."

In recent interviews, Trump has been posed questions as to why measures were not taken earlier to prevent the spread of the disease. Protesters have started to protest in the streets, as the economy has been brought to a near standstill through lockdown procedures. There are many debates happening regarding whether to open up businesses, with the risk of health care facilities becoming overwhelmed with demand as more cases are recorded.

Congressman Don Beyer of Virginia also took to Twitter to give his thoughts on Trump’s actions:

“From the beginning Trump has flailed about seeking someone to blame for his own failure. Obama. Governors. China. Speaker Pelosi. People of Asian descent. Immigration has nearly stopped and the US has far more cases than any other country. This is just xenophobic scapegoating.”

Over the next few days we can expect to find out more about Trump’s intentions and which immigration programs he is proposing to be affected.
